Flush Threshold Drainage
A threshold is what you step across when you enter a room. Typically, door thresholds maybe raised, stepping down from outside to inside. Raised door thresholds eliminate the problem of water entering into internal spaces. However, raised thresholds can cause trips and falls and inconvenience access and mobility.
To avoid trips and falls and enable equitable access and mobility, a flush or level door threshold is the preferred system. When floors are level across a threshold, however, there is the threat of water ingress and damage.
To avoid structural problems related to water damage, it is important to design thresholds with care and consideration. Threshold designs must comply with Australian standards and codes around waterproofing (AS4654.2), water proof membranes (AS/NZS 4858), access and mobility (AS1428) and so on.
Water Proof Thresholds
Installing a fit for purpose, user friendly, easy-to-maintain threshold drainage system alongside the door sill is one solution to avoid water-related problems in thresholds. A threshold drainage system allows you to design and construct a waterproof threshold. A well-designed threshold drainage system offers a conduit to drain water away. Secondly, it protects against wind-driven water, hitting the door and/or entering the building. Thirdly, it complements or works well with the sub-sill of the selected door system that is being used. Fourthly, it interacts well with waterproof membranes in place. Lastly, it offers a separation between itself and other metals used in the door assembly to avoid the risk of galvanic corrosion.
Applications of Threshold Drainage Systems
Threshold drainage systems can be applied in a variety of contexts. They work well with any type of door – whether sliding, swinging or bifolding. They work well in any type of building such as private homes, apartments. They are very popular in buildings where level thresholds are necessary, for example, assisted living facilities, nursing homes, hospitals and so on.
